5 Reasons Why Your Air Conditioning Isn’t Working

Few things are worse than having air-conditioning problems, especially in the sweltering Singapore heat. A broken air-conditioning unit is not only an inconvenience, but it’s also a major health concern.  But why did a breakdown happen all of a sudden? Well, the sooner you identify the problem, the quicker your air-conditioning can be repaired. Here are 5 common reasons why your aircon stopped working, so that you can better communicate the root cause to your aircon service personnel.

Dirty Condenser Coils

The primary function of the condenser coils is to release heat during the cooling process.  For optimal airflow, a minimum of 1 metre of clear overhead is typically recommended and doing so can see an immediate improvement in airflow. Dirt and debris build up over time, which can cause your air-conditioning unit to overheat and shut down entirely.  As a result, your unit will not be able to cool your home effectively.

Damaged Refrigerant Coolant

The coolant is what gives life to your air-conditioning and drives energy-efficient cooling. However, depending on the age of your aircon unit, coolant leaks can occur due to worn or damaged pipelines.  This results in refrigerant levels to drop over time, therefore requiring an overall recharge of your air conditioning system. Due to the complex nature of cooling systems, a professional air-conditioning service team should be engaged as soon as possible for the task.

Clogged Drainpipes

Moisture from your air-conditioning is removed via a drain pipe. Should the drainpipe get clogged (typically from algae and dirt), the moisture can greatly reduce the cooling capacity of your air-conditioning. Worse still, this issue can result in water leakages that can damage the components of your air-conditioning unit.  Your wall or furnishings will not be spared from the eventual mould growth, which will also serve as a sign that you need air-conditioning services soon. To mediate the situation before your next aircon servicing, you can clean the pipes with a mild bleach solution.

Faulty Thermostat

If your air-conditioning unit isn’t releasing cold air despite a lack of power issues, you may be facing a faulty thermostat issue. How a thermostat works is by directing the compressor to start or stop the cooling cycle, depending on the room temperature.  To double-check, turn the dial down to the lowest setting and see if your air conditioning unit trips. You should also check all essential wiring and batteries before reporting it to your air-conditioning specialist.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

If you’ve ever noticed water leaking from your air-conditioning unit, chances are that you may have a frozen evaporator coil.  The objective of the evaporator coil is to absorb heat in your household and allow cool air to blow out.  Dust built-up in your ductwork and in your air filter can lead to water accumulation in your cooling unit, resulting in a frozen evaporator coil. This can result in mould growth, increased stagnant water in the condenser pan and an unpleasant odour if unchecked.
